Here's something I did when we first
moved in here 14 years ago.

I put a bolt lock on our bedroom door.
It's almost never locked, but if something
happens whike I am not home, Honey can
lock herself in at night, or during the day
she can take refuge in there quickly, grap
a pepper spray and phone for help.

Honey had some of her friend's landscape
crew clear most of the existing plants out
of our front yard today. I know she bought an
almond tree to plant there, but I think she
also bought several more fruit trees too.

Honey enjoyed reading
The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World
by Michael Pollan.

She has started
The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
also by M Pollan.

She thinks it gonna be good too,
but is afraid it will turn her into a vegetarian.
We are getting chickens by Spring for eggs,
so that is good, but I don't think she will let me
buy anything but Lasater (grass fed) beef in the
future. Don't know where I can get pastured
chickens to eat.

We don't have enough room to raise chickens
for food. Even if we raise a few here they would
only be a few and she would get too attached to
them. When she was a child, some chickens were
pets, others were for eating.

As I mentioned before in another thread
I ordered a bunch of Photon keychain lights.
I think I am going to like these a lot.

I put an orange Micro Light II in my truck,
and on my dresser. It's so small and lightweight
I can hold it twixt me lips, no teeth need get
involved. Good for stumbling around in the
morning looking for clothes to put on, without
disturbing Honey with bright white light.

I am liking the X-light Micro too. One is now on
my keychain. Very easy control of functions.
Click on for full power, click off. Because of the
clear case when it's hanging on my belt, light is
spread over a wide area, allowing use of both
hands to do stuff. When stealth is desired,
click and hold, .... it starts VERY dim and gets
brighter gradually until full power, then it cycles
through strobe functions. Only have to remember
two things, click or click an hold.

Hi gasilat-

I was reminiscing. Fishing with Tom had to be
~20 years ago, so things could be different now.
Wed catch and release undersize buts fairly often.
I think legal was 22, dont know what that is in
weight. We didnt hook keepers very often.
Using live anchovy, I think we were happy if we
caught a 20 pounder. My plater (anodizer) mentioned
fishing a few weeks ago. He catches monster buts
up north where the water is cold. If I remember
correctly, he says they catch 200 pounders.

Then I remembered I have several

Edit: Separating the oil, of course, would just be the first step.
Next, a coffee filter to remove large particles.
Then, carbon/silver filter, .... etc.

In a longer term bad water situation maybe use
a Berky since the ceramic can be refreshed many
times. But the carbon gets used up before the
ceramic goes bad. When that happens use a cheap
carbon filter like PUR or similar, after the Berkey.

Hi naccarato-

Based on licking a finger and sticking

up a two spot from this week.
That was before I saw that the

media attention the event receives, it
might induce some gole bugs to buy
a lil more, but I doubt it will put POG
on J6P's radar screen. I am leaving
my bet unchanged.

I tried day trading gold twice.
For longer than a year each time.
Finally gave up, and will never
trade futures again. (Anybody go long

For "long term", I have the majority of my

Warm climate apples

We have a dwarf Anna apple tree in back yard that got big.
Great taste.

The Fuji apple tree in our narrow side yard got woolly aphid,
which is very difficult to eradicate. Thought it was going
to die years ago, so I gave up and quit spraying,
now it looks like it is going to survive.

We just planted a Golden Dorsett in the front yard.

Not about survival preps/strategies,
just an observation .....

Some of our backyard birds
(the Mockingbirds and House Finches)
love our home grown Anna apples. When we
have a lot, we cut some in half and put 'em
out on the ground. Luckily the birds don't peck
on them (not much anyway) while still on the
tree. But if we don't have any Anna's, like now,
the birds won't eat any variety of store bought
apples.

Re: Sam's Occasional Comments

We had a Five-in-One apple tree just outside
my office window. Not to say one wouldn't
be good for someone with limited space, in
another climate, but it was a disappointment
for us. It didn't grow well. Because it had so
many grafts, the branches grew in weird directions,
it was very difficult to know how to prune it.
The shape kept getting worse and worse. And
it never produced very many apples. Not sure
what Honey will plant in that spot next.
Maybe a persimmon, maybe another Anna.

sam 01-16-2007 03:28 PM

Re: Sam's Occasional Comments

Hi naccarato-

The reason woolly aphids
(at least the kind that infest apple trees)
are so difficult to eradicate, is that part
of their life cycle occurs fairly deep in the
soil.

I just went out and looked at our Fuji.
There is no evidence of active infestation.
I believe that low temperatures help keep
their outbreaks down, but the aphids went
away during normal mild weather. Something
else got to 'em.........

Re: Sam's Occasional Comments

Hi naccarato-

A landscape maintenance friend
gave us some spray available only
to licensed professionals, if I recall
correctly. I'll try to find out what
it was. BUT it didn't work for me
long term anyway.

What will slow them down for a
while is a mixture of pyrethrin and
safer. These are both fairly innocuous
for people and birds. You have to keep
spraying frequently. I believe both
labels say you can spray up to the day
of harvest.

pyrethrin

"Safer" insecticidal soap concentrate is
getting hard to find. Try to find a supplier to
landscsape professionals in your area.
Ready-to-use stuff is way too expensive,
the concentrate is priced steep enough.

I think the soap helps as a sticker (wetting agent)
if nothing else. I mix them together as if the
other wasn't in the sprayer. Example: For a two
gallon sprayer I add 5 tablespoons of Bug Buster-O
AND whatever the Safer instructions say for
two gallons.

I don't like to spray unless absolutely necessary.
One really bad whitefly season a few years back
had me using this mixture a lot.

A natural enemy like wasps or mites (wild guessing)
might have been what finally knocked out my woolly
aphids. Or who knows, they might return this spring.....

Lackluster-

M-pede, yes, thank you, that has to be it.
Honey got the name of the product by phone
from an orange grove manager. I didn't
think of this spelling.

naccarato-

The smallest quantity availble may be
2.5 gal at about $90 (125 gal working solution.)
That is why I guessed it was only available to
professional users.

Since Safer soap seems similar to M-pede,
you may be able to substitute, BUT call
the maker and make sure that it is safe
to mix Safer with dormant oil.

fifteen are up on the day.
Only one is down and it's a
pharma stock. A rare event .....

Thanks naccarato.

My DSL modem died Friday morning.
Just now back on with (ugh) dial up,
until I get my new ADSL service in a
week. So, I couldn't make a Kitco POG
guess for this week....

Re: Sam's Occasional Comments

Over in the 9mm thread, I inquired
about the interchangeability of
5.56 BALL vs .223 REM.
Now I remember why I asked.

I believe a Ruger Mini 14 will fire
both rounds, but there could be an
issue with firing 5.56 BALL in a bolt
action chambered for .223 REM.
Many years ago I asked the owner
of my local gun shop, called Ruger
and some others who should know,
but got conflicting answers.

What say you folks?

Hillary has a decent chance of grabbing the top spot.

Why do I think so?

She looks sooooo much like George Washington.

Sorry Geo, gotta call it like I see it........

Got two chicken hens last night. :yippee:
No eggs yet, ... heh.

I thought I read here that there are
a few items that should not be fed to
chickens. If true, what are the nixed items?
